Wintergreen Oil: Safe or Toxic?

Is Wintergreen oil safe or toxic?During my training, Wintergreen was on the list of “banned essential oils” that we were taught never to use in aromatherapy. In the Encyclopedia of Essential Oils (Julia Lawless), Wintergreen is described as “toxic, irritant and sensitizing”. It is listed as having no aromatherapy or home uses, with the recommendation to “avoid both internally and externally”.

Neroli or Petitgrain?

Neroli or Petitgrain essential oil?

This week I came across this bottle of essential oil for sale in the cosmetics section of TK Maxx. It’s from an Australian brand called Eco Aroma, who sell a range of aromatherapy skin care products and essential oils.

At first glance, it appears to be a 10ml bottle of pure neroli essential oil — it quite clearly states “pure essential oil” and “neroli” in bold text.

Seeing as the average price of 10ml pure neroli essential oil would be around the £100 mark, I was curious to know why this was on sale for less than a tenth of that price.

How To Become An Aromatherapist

How to become an aromatherapist

What does an aromatherapist do?

An aromatherapist uses essential oils to improve his/her clients’ emotional and physical wellbeing. Although not allowed to provide medical advice, diagnose illnesses or claim to cure any medical condition, aromatherapists can help to ease symptoms and reduce stress.

Holistic therapies are based on the concept of treating the whole person – mind, body and spirit – rather than focusing purely on physical symptoms. This acknowledges the importance of mental wellbeing and its relationship with our physical health.

With more and more people opting to take a natural approach to health, there is a growing demand for holistic therapies. An increasing awareness of aromatherapy has seen its popularity surge over recent decades.

Can I Cook With Essential Oils?

Can I cook with essential oils?

Cooking with essential oils is a burgeoning yet often misunderstood concept. Traditionally, professional aromatherapy training has always warned against consuming essential oils, but now we are seeing more and more recommendations to incorporate them into our everyday food and drinks.

Recently, it has become fashionable to advocate drinking drops of essential oils in water, ostensibly to improve internal health (read more about this here). Pinterest is full of beautiful blog posts about how to use essential oils in cookery – in fact, it has become mainstream to the point where we’re now led to believe that essential oils can just be liberally added to anything we eat and drink.

It’s no wonder that people are left feeling confused – on the one hand, we’re told not to take essential oils internally. On the other hand, we’re being encouraged to use them in our cooking.
